Broome County Housing Needs Assessment
In April 2023 Broome County began development of a County-wide Housing Needs Assessment. The Broome County Housing Needs Assessment is the result of a collaborative effort led by the Broome County Planning Department and made possible with the support of the project consultants Camoin Associates and Highland Planning, the Steering Committee consisting of members from various county and local government departments and community organizations, as well as residents and community stakeholders. This effort builds on existing plans and local priorities to create a better understanding of housing needs and potential solutions for Broome County. The purpose of this project is to identify existing and future housing needs, as well as critical housing gaps and issues, and develop strategies that guide activities related to housing opportunities for the County, municipalities, and other partners.
Public Engagement Activities
- Broome County Housing Needs Assessment Community Presentation - Join us on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 5:30 - 6:30 PM in the Broome County Public Library Decker Room located at 185 Court Street, Binghamton, New York 13901. The meeting will include a presentation of the Broome County Housing Needs Assessment. Project consultants, Camoin Associates, will provide an overview of the findings from the needs analysis and recommendations of the report.
- Public Survey - A survey was conducted as part of the Housing Needs Assessment project during May 2023 to solicit residents’ perspectives on a variety of housing-related topics. Thank you to the 1,000 + county households that participated in the public survey!
- Public Workshop - Broome County held an open-house public workshop on October 12, 2023, at the Broome County Public Library to share some of the initial findings of the needs analysis and gather input and ideas from the community about housing needs and potential solutions. The public workshop included a series of interactive stations which focused on: general housing challenges faced by individuals and the community, housing needs for various population groups, types of housing needed in the community, opportunities available to address the housing needs, draft goals and strategies, and open-ended comment boards that allowed participants to share ideas for other solutions and general comments for the plan. During the workshop a brief presentation was provided, sharing information on the planning process, data and trends identified in the needs analysis, as well as highlights from the public survey. The feedback received during the workshop will be used to develop and refine the strategies and recommendations for the draft plan.
